Introduction

In photographs taken over the span of seventy years of postwar history, the late Osamu Murai (1928-2016) documented the immense changes occurring both in Japan and abroad. His subjects and interests stretched beyond prominent works of architecture and sculpture to include also everyday life, culture, ethnic groups, religious rituals, and festivals as well as the subtle changes in topography and nature’s seasons. The countless rolls of film and photographic images he has left behind are a record of his individual vision and, simultaneously, a communal “memory” that transcends his particular place in time. The goal of this website is to preserve and transmit to future generations his photographic art and related materials in a manner true to his vision; it is intended to lay the foundations of a structure whereby his work will be encountered anew.
